Gender and WASH Institute, 2024

The Gender and WASH Institute 2024 reaffirmed CREA’s commitment to a gender, sexuality, and rights-based approach in the urban sanitation sector. Held over five days in Mumbai, it equipped participants to address barriers faced by excluded groups, improve sanitation worker conditions, and reimagine policies through an intersectional lens. The programme combined interactive sessions and inclusive pedagogy to promote equitable sanitation access.

What you’ll find in this report

  • Discussion on the Gender Transformative Approach (GTA) in the WASH sector, emphasising that inclusion alone is insufficient and that transformation of norms, power relations, and systemic inequalities is essential
  • Recognition of Dalit women’s labour as central to survival and the economy, yet persistently stigmatised and devalued due to intersecting inequalities of caste, gender, and dignity
  • Session on trans-inclusive sanitation highlighting that true inclusion requires not only legal access but sustained education, dialogue, and infrastructure that address stigma, diversity, and safety
